What Is a Compliance Plate?

A compliance plate is attached to a vehicle by a manufacturer or an importer that states that the vehicle complies with the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 (Australian Design Rules or ADRs).

The Compliance Plate includes the Vehicle Identification Number, the Compliance Date shown in Month and Year and the Manufacturer.

Note: The Commonwealth Government replaced the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 (MVSA) with the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA) and Road Vehicle Standards Rules 2019.

Under this latest legislation, the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) replaces the need to fit road vehicles with identification plates containing compliance information and a certification statement from the manufacturer. RAV is an electronic register, consisting of approval details for vehicles approved under the RVSA for road use in Australia.

From Jul. 1st, 2021, compliance plates will be gradually phased out in Australia.
