What Is The Integrated Trailer Brake Controller?

Available on Ranger & Everest and compatible across different trailer setups, the optional factory-fit Integrated Trailer Brake Controller delivers smooth and effective trailer braking.
The Trailer Brake Controller automatically applies the trailer brakes when the towing vehicle's brakes are applied.
Note: Drivers will need to create a profile of their trailers in SYNC to support the Trailer Brake Controller and must set the gain on the Brake Controller unit. Please refer to your Owner's Manual or the instructions below on how to set the gain.
If you’re towing a trailer weighing more than 750kg then your trailer will need brakes and if equipped with electrical brakes, your vehicle will need an electric trailer brake controller to control them. Adjusting the level of braking force, (known as ‘gain’) you want the trailer’s brakes to apply is as easy as pressing the (+) (-) symbols. The (+) sign increases the braking force, and the (-) symbol reduces it.
Slowing down when towing takes longer than when you’re driving normally, so make sure you begin braking earlier than you normally would and be gentle on the pedal to avoid unnecessary grabbing and pitching.
How to set up the integrated trailer brake controller:
- Make sure the brakes on your trailer are in good working order
- When you connect your trailer, and if it has electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes, a message confirming connection will appear on the SYNC4A screen
- Use the (+) or (-) buttons on the integrated trailer brake controller to adjust the gain (or braking force). A gain setting of 6.0 is a good starting point for heavier loads.
- To fine-tune the brake gain, start driving up to 30km/h and pressing the brake pedal to slow the vehicle. If you feel like the braking is too aggressive, then reduce the gain. Or if not enough braking assistance from the trailer, then you will need to increase it
- Further fine tuning can be done on the fly by using the +/- hard buttons if the driver wishes to.
To set up the trailer brake force when towing, access the integrated trailer brake controller mode option on the active trailer profile. Then either press Default for trailers with electromagnetic drum brake systems or press Electric over Hydraulic for trailers with electrically actuated hydraulic braking systems. Press Save. Then select the amount of trailer brake effort for your trailer. Low is the default value and considered enough for most trailers. Select a higher setting if you prefer more aggressive braking. Press Save.
