Actions Needed

Your vehicle is installed with a faulty front driver Takata airbag and is currently under active recall.

Please book in with your Ford Dealer without delay to have your vehicle inspected ASAP.

You may also call 1800 503 673 for additional information.

The safety risk:

If your vehicle is involved in a collision, the airbag inflator could rupture, causing sharp metal fragments to enter the vehicle cabin at high speed, and kill or injure vehicle occupants.

There is also a risk that the airbag may underinflate in a collision and may not protect the driver as intended.

The defect:

In your vehicle, the front driver airbag inflator could allow moisture to enter the unit and degrade the airbag propellant. If this occurs, the properties of the propellant may be changed so that the propellant does not react as intended during an accident, causing misdeployment of the airbag and giving rise to the above risks.

Actions Needed

Your vehicle is currently under active recall.

Your vehicle is installed with a faulty front driver and/or front passenger Takata airbag. As it gets older, a combination of high temperatures and humidity can affect airbags with the fault. If you are involved in a collision, the airbag can go off with too much explosive force causing sharp metal fragments to shoot out and kill or seriously injure people in the vehicle.

You should immediately contact a Ford Dealer to arrange for the front driver and/or front passenger airbag or airbag inflator to be replaced.

Please take note that any replacement airbags installed in your vehicle following a collision or other incident may also be faulty. It is critical that you urgently contact a Ford Dealer to arrange for the airbags to be checked and replaced, if faulty.

Why are you issuing this recall?

Ford is issuing an urgent recall on all vehicles fitted with affected frontal driver and passenger Takata airbag inflators. It comes as part of the Federal Government’s compulsory recall of all vehicles fitted with frontal driver and passenger Takata airbags with nondesiccated ammonium nitrate inflators plus desiccated ammonium nitrate inflators using a calcium sulphate desiccant.

These airbags are faulty and could kill or seriously injure you and other people in your vehicle.

The affected vehicles are Econovan (2004-2005), Courier (2004- 2006), Ranger (2006-2011), Mondeo (2007-2009) and Mondeo(2014-2017).

It’s crucial these vehicle owners check if they’re affected by using the VIN lookup tool on Ford's website www.ford.com.au/Takata-airbag-recall, by calling 1800 503 673 or by contacting their local Ford Dealer.

What vehicles are affected?

Approximately 108,000 Ford vehicles are affected by the recall.
The vehicles affected are:

  • Econovan (2004-2005) – approx. 1300 vehicles
  • Courier (2004-2006) – approx. 21000 vehicles
  • Ranger (2006-2011) – approx. 69500 vehicles
  • Mondeo (2007-2009) – approx. 9500 vehicles
  • Mondeo (2014-2017) – approx. 6500 vehicles

What is your recall strategy, given the volume?

This recall will be rolled progressively based on parts availability and we will start with oldest vehicles and those in locations of high heat and humidity first. All vehicles are now under active recall.

Please refer to Ford’s Recall Initiation Schedule here for details on when vehicles will be recalled. You can also find copies of the Ford’s Recall and Replacement Timetable here and Quarterly Completion Schedule in the link here.

How do I know whether or not my vehicle is affected?

You can use the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) look-up tool on Ford’s website www.ford.com.au/takata-airbag-recall to identify if your vehicle is affected. Ford will be notifying all customers and Ford Dealers directly when vehicles are under active recall.

You can also contact your local Ford Dealer or call the Ford Takata hotline to check if your vehicle is affected on 1800 503 673.

How much will the replacement cost me?

You can have your vehicle repaired at any Ford Dealer in Australia, and the repairs will be performed at no cost to you.

How long will the replacement take?

The time required is less than half a day, depending on your vehicle. Please discuss arrangements with your Dealer at the time of booking.

If your Ford Dealer needs to keep your vehicle for longer than 24 hours in order to carry out the repairs, you will be supplied with a loan vehicle to drive during the repairs.

We understand recalls may be an inconvenience, however your safety is a top priority so it’s critical that you take action now.

If I’m in an accident will my airbag actually deploy?

Yes. If the airbag inflator hasn’t degraded to a critical point, the airbag will still perform as normal.

However, an airbag inflator with degraded propellant will still deploy the airbag in the event of an accident but may go off with too much explosive force causing sharp metal fragments to shoot out and kill or seriously injure people in the vehicle.
