Understanding payload

Your Ranger Super Duty is designed to carry serious loads. But what exactly is payload?

Payload1 is the total weight your truck can safely carry, including all passengers, cargo, and accessories. It’s the difference between the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) and the truck’s Kerb Weight.

Kerb Weight1 is the weight of the base vehicle, with a full tank of fuel and all essential fluids, but without any passengers, cargo, factory options, accessory, or other aftermarket additions.

Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)1, or Gross Vehicle Mass Rating (GVWR), is the maximum allowable total weight of the vehicle and everything in it. For the Ranger Super Duty, GVM is 4,500 kg.

Don’t confuse payload with towing capacity, which is the maximum weight your truck can legally tow. These are distinct from Gross Combined Mass (GCM), which is the maximum legal weight of your Ranger Super Duty and your hitched trailer combined (8,000 kg). Ranger Super Duty’s Onboard Scales help reduce the guesswork when managing payload. Using ride height sensors in the suspension, the system estimates your payload in real time and alerts you if the limit is exceeded.

Check your load on the SYNC® touchscreen before you roll:

  • Park on level ground. For the most accurate reading, make sure the:
    • Truck is on a flat surface with the wheels pointing straight.
    • Transmission is in park (P).
    • Ignition is on.
    • Tyre pressures are at recommended level.
  • Open Onboard Scales. On the SYNC® touchscreen, open the App Menu , then select Onboard Scales.
  • Check your current load. The display shows your estimated payload and how close you are to the truck’s maximum capacity (tolerance of ±100 kg).
  • Adjust if needed. If the graphic shows you’re near or over the limit, remove weight to stay within the rated payload.
  • Recheck before driving. After you adjust the load, repeat the procedure to confirm you’re within safe limits.
  • Plan ahead. Set a Passenger and Cargo Load Reminder to reserve payload for people and gear you intend to pick up later.

Maximising stability and safety

When loading your Ranger Super Duty, the golden rule is to distribute weight evenly and keep it low. Place the heaviest items on the tray floor, as close to the cab and as central as possible. Lighter items can be loaded higher up. This approach creates a lower centre of gravity, which improves stability , reduces body roll and makes the vehicle more predictable. Always weigh your items to ensure you do not exceed your overall payload limit and reduce weight if necessary, or consider using a trailer.

Spread the load across both axles. Be aware that adding significant weight over one axle will reduce the load on the other (imagine a seesaw). Concentrating weight at the very front or rear of the vehicle can cause you to exceed individual axle limits , also known as Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR), even if your overall GVM is within specification.

Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight that can be safely supported by the road wheels on each axle of the vehicle. For the Ranger Super Duty, the front axle GAWR is 1,900 kg and the rear axle GAWR is 2,800 kg.

Therefore, always ensure your load distribution keeps both your front and rear axles under these rated limits. Balanced loads help the suspension and brakes perform at their best.

A fully loaded truck handles differently. You have more momentum, so it takes longer to stop.

  • Brake accordingly. Leave more following distance, anticipate stops earlier and brake smoothly and progressively.
  • Adjust your steering. A heavy load can raise the centre of gravity and increase body roll. Slow down for corners and avoid sudden steering inputs or quick lane changes.
  • Check your tyres. Before loading up, inflate tyres to the recommended cold inflation pressures. The tyre placard on the driver’s door jamb provides specific pressures for both lightly loaded operation and when operating at GVM. Note that when at GVM, the rear tyres of your Ranger Super Duty require 65 psi. As this is a high pressure, some service station pumps may not reach it; consider a portable air compressor to ensure correct inflation.
