The Language of Towing: Know Your Weights

Before you hitch up, it’s essential to understand the numbers. Exceeding your vehicle's limits can affect performance, handling and safety. Here are the key terms you need to know and what they mean for you.

Trailer Nose Weight (TNW): Sometimes referred to as Tow Ball Downforce Weight or Tow Ball Download, this is the amount of weight the trailer exerts downwards on the vehicle’s tow ball and typically aims about 10% of the trailer’s total weight when fully loaded. When the trailer is hitched to a vehicle, the TNW directly reduces your vehicle’s available payload.

  • Considered one of the most important factors for safe, stable trailer towing, TNW directly influences the stability of the entire vehicle-trailer combination - too little can lead to dangerous trailer sway (snaking) and loss of control, while too much can overload the towing vehicle's rear axle and compromise steering.
  • Ranger Super Duty can accommodate either a 50mm tow ball or a heavy-duty 70mm tow ball5 depending on your aggregate trailer mass (ATM).

Kerb Weight1: The weight of the base vehicle, with a full tank of fuel and all essential fluids, but without any passengers, cargo, factory options, accessory, or other aftermarket additions.

Payload1: This is the maximum weight your Ranger Super Duty can carry in the cab and tray, including passengers, luggage and any accessories (bulbar, driving lights, etc). When the trailer is hitched to the vehicle, TNW counts toward your vehicle’s payload.

Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)1: The total legal weight of your vehicle when fully loaded. This is the vehicle’s own weight (kerb weight) plus its payload. When the trailer is hitched to the vehicle, payload is inclusive of TNW.

Gross Trailer Mass (GTM)1:The weight of your fully loaded trailer when it is hitched to your vehicle, minus the TNW, since the TNW is now supported by the towing vehicle. This is the weight carried by the trailer's axles.

Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM)1: The total weight of your fully loaded trailer when it is unhitched. It combines the weight on the trailer’s axles (GTM) and the weight on the tow ball (the TNW).

Gross Combined Mass (GCM)1: The maximum legal weight of your Ranger Super Duty and your hitched trailer combined.

Note: While approximate kerb weight and payload for your Ranger Super Duty are available in the official specifications sheet, it is recommended to weigh your vehicle via a public weighbridge before and after adding additional load to ensure maximum Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), Gross Combined Mass (GCM) and Gross Axle Weight Ratings (GAWR) are not exceeded.

The Foundation: Perfecting Your Balance

A stable trailer starts with a balanced load. Your Ranger Super Duty has a class-leading6 feature, Smart Hitch3 7, designed to reduce the guesswork out of this crucial step.

Smart Hitch uses sensors in the suspension to estimate your TNW when your trailer coupling is lowered into place. It provides a real-time, easy-to-read graphic on your SYNC® screen, showing you the status of your TNW.

It also offers clear, actionable guidance, allowing you to distribute cargo in your trailer evenly for better balance and control before you even leave the driveway. For instance, if your TNW is too light, it will instruct you to "Increase the hitch weight by moving the load in the trailer toward the hitch".

Note that the system won’t work if:

  • The wheels do not point straight ahead.
  • Your vehicle is not in park (P).
  • Your vehicle is not on a level surface.
  • The tyre pressures are below the recommended levels.
  • Your ignition is off.

To access Smart Hitch, open the App Menu on the SYNC® touchscreen and then select Smart Hitch from the menu. Input the weight of the trailer and its cargo, if known, by selecting Loaded Trailer Weight. Once added, the system provides a recommended range of 10 - 15% for the TNW and guides you on adjusting your hitch weight, which helps prevent you from exceeding the load rating of the hitch used.

If the weight of the trailer is unknown, you can select Unknown Trailer Weight. The system will provide a TNW estimate, but won’t provide a recommended TNW range.

On the Road: Features for Total Control

Once you're moving, a new set of forces comes into play. The Ranger Super Duty gives you a suite of tools to manage them.

Tow/Haul Mode2: Engaging Tow/Haul mode on the selectable drive mode control dial optimises the entire powertrain for heavy loads. It adjusts transmission shift points to hold gears longer, which helps prevent the engine from labouring and providing crucial engine braking on steep descents. It also adjusts steering assist to provide improved steering feel. This gives you more control, helps reduces wear on your brakes and creates a smoother, more stable ride.

Integrated Trailer Brake Controller3: If you’re towing a trailer equipped with electric brakes, Ranger Super Duty’s Integrated Trailer Brake Controller is essential, eliminating the need for an aftermarket unit. Seamlessly integrated into Ranger Super Duty’s advanced driver assist system, it synchronises the trailer's brakes with your vehicle's, ensuring they work together for smoother, more controlled stopping.

You can easily adjust the trailer brake ‘gain’ by pressing the (+) and (-) symbols on the dashboard:

  • (+) increases the force
  • (-) reduces the force

For added control, the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller also includes a manual override function, allowing you to apply the trailer’s electric brakes independently of the towing vehicle.

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Trailer Coverage4 Changing lanes with a large trailer can be stressful. BLIS with Trailer Coverage extends your vehicle’s blind spot sensors to monitor the entire length of your trailer. The system can alert you with a light in your side mirror if a vehicle enters the blind spot of your trailer, giving you more confidence to change lanes safely.

Setting up the system is easy. During a one-time setup for your trailer, you’ll input its dimensions into the SYNC® system. From then on, whenever that trailer is connected and selected as the active profile on SYNC®, the system automatically provides coverage.

The Final Hurdle: Reversing with Pro Trailer Backup Assist The Final Hurdle: Reversing with Pro Trailer Backup Assist

The Final Hurdle:

Reversing with Pro Trailer Backup Assist4

Reversing a trailer is tough and one of the most challenging parts of towing. Pro Trailer Backup Assist turns a difficult task into a simple one by taking the guesswork out of reversing. You simply turn the selectable drive mode control dial on the centre console in the direction you want the trailer to go, and the system handles the steering wheel for you.

Pro Trailer Backup Assist for Ranger Super Duty uses a sensor that you mount on your trailer’s drawbar, this is different to the camera-based system on other Ranger products with Pro Trailer Backup Assist. During a simple, one-time trailer profile setup and calibration drive, the system determines the hitch position and trailer length, saving it to the trailer profile. From then on, all you have to do is select the saved trailer profile, then control the knob and the accelerator - the truck does the complex steering calculations for you.

By mastering these features, you’re using the Ranger Super Duty’s built-in intelligence to its full potential, ensuring every journey with a trailer is as safe, stable and stress-free as possible.
