How do I use the Trailer Light Check feature?

Using your SYNC® screen or the Vehicle screen of FordPass®, you can check your trailer's turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights, and rear fog lamps. Use the steps below for more information. 

Requirements

  • Your vehicle is and remains in park (P) mode.
  • Your vehicle battery is in a good state of charge (above 70%).
  • Your vehicle's ignition is on.
  • Your vehicle's brake lights, blinkers, hazard lights, and external lights are turned off. 
  • Your trailer must be electronically connected. 

    Note: You can verify your connection using the Vehicle Image > Towing > Connection Checklist options on your SYNC screen. 

How to Do a Trailer Light Check

Trailer Light Check Using FordPass

To perform a Trailer Check using FordPass:

  1. Log in to the FordPass App.
  2. Go to the Vehicle screen. 
  3. Select the Features & Settings header. 
  4. Tap the Trailer Light Check tile.
  5. Review the light sequence.

Note: Tap the information icon (circled letter i) for an overview of the Trail Light Check features.

  1. Tap Start to begin the light check.
    • The signal will go to the cloud and the Start button will grey out until the command is returned.
    • The Trailer Light Check is in progress when Start changes to Stop. 
  2. Select Stop to end the light check at any time. FordPass will display a banner confirming the stop.

Once the Trailer Light Check is complete, a banner displays a completion message. 

Trailer Light Check Using SYNC

To perform a Trailer Light Check using SYNC:

  1. Tap the vehicle image at the top of the screen.
  2. Scroll down and select Towing.
  3. Tap Trailer Light Check.
  4. Review the light sequence and select Start.

The Trailer Light Check is now in progress. You can quit the check by pressing Stop or Exit

Failed Trailer Light Check 

If your Trailer Light Check does not complete and you meet the requirements mentioned above, do the following:

  1. Check the trailer wiring harness connection to your vehicle.
  2. Check the trailer tow fuses in the power distribution box. 

    Note: If you need guidance, refer to your Owner’s Manual.

  3. Inspect the trailer lamps.
  4. Replace any faulty bulb(s).
