Inductive Wireless Charging Pad

Did you know that you can keep your smartphone charged on the go in your Ranger or Everest without plugging it in? Here’s what you need to know about Ford’s Wireless Charging Pad.

With Ford’s wireless charging pad1, you can ditch your charging cables and declutter the interior – making life with your Ranger/Everest a little more convenient.

Simple to use with all Qi-compatible devices, the charging pad also provides a safe and convenient place to store and charge your phone on the go. If your phone supports wireless charging, it will work with the charging pad. If you’re unsure, you can check its specifications online, or on the device itself in your battery information menu.

Charging a device

Charging is simple: just place your device on the centre of the charging surface with the charging side (usually the back of the phone) facing down. Your phone should start charging a few seconds after you place it on your wireless charger. The charging pad works when the vehicle is in accessory mode, when the engine is running, or when the SYNCÒ screen is on.

You’ll know your device is charging when the battery icon appears on your SYNCÒ screen status bar. Charging stops after your device reaches full charge.

Tips for best performance

Your phone needs to be placed flat and centrally on the wireless charger.

If you keep your phone in a case, it’s best to remove it while it’s on the charging pad. Wireless charging uses magnetic induction to charge your phone. Magnetic mounts, magnetic cases, or other objects between your phone and the charger might reduce performance or damage magnetic strips or RFID chips like those found in some credit cards, security badges, passports, and key fobs. If your case holds any of these sensitive items, remove them before charging or make sure that they aren’t between the back of your phone and the charger.

Metallic objects – like keys, magnetic clips, hinges, or hooks – should also be kept as far away from the charger as possible. You can use one of the central cup holders, glove box or centre console to store your keys and other items.

If your phone vibrates – when it gets a notification, for example – it may shift position on the charging pad. This can cause the charging pad to stop providing power to the phone. If this happens often, try turning off the vibration function, or turning on Do Not Disturb2,3.

It’s normal for a phone to warm up while it’s on the wireless charging pad – especially if you’re running apps and it’s connected to Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The more apps you have open and in use, the more the phone will warm up.

Your phone might also display warnings like “Phone needs to cool down” or “Device cooling down”, or may even go into protective mode to prevent overheating. This is not a fault: it’s the device’s way of protecting itself from overheating regardless of the way it’s being charged.

Ambient temperature inside the cabin – especially during the summer months – can also affect the core temperature of your phone. The phone will charge, but you may find that it will reach its protective mode faster.

Charging may stop or slow down and the phone temperature may rise quickly if:

  • The system detects a foreign metallic object.
  • The phone is in a case
  • The device is misaligned on the charging pad
  • The device moves from the active charging area when the vehicle is moving
  • The vehicle’s ambient temperature is too high

1.  Available Qi wireless charging may not be compatible with all mobile phones.

2. Don’t drive distracted. Use voice operated systems where possible and don’t use handheld devices while driving. Some features may be locked out while the vehicle is in gear. Not all SYNC features are compatible with all phones. SYNC screen appearance and functionality may change over time due to software updates.

3. Always abide by local laws when driving.
