Night time driving
with confidence

Advanced lighting features in Everest1 help take the stress out of driving at night. Here’s how to use Everest's headlamps and a handful of handy hints for night driving.

Clean your windscreen

There’s nothing worse than driving down the road at night, only to realise the steam and grease from last night’s takeaway has left your windscreen a smeary mess. External light will hit these streaks and cause glare on the inside of the vehicle. A pro tip to help keep your windscreen crystal clean is to use some paper towel and an ammonia-free window cleaner to wipe the inside and out of your windscreen.

Use the right lights

Your Everest is equipped with daytime running lamps (DRLs) which activate to help you be seen on the road. Daytime running lamps are always on during daylight and when vehicle ignition is on. Be aware that the DRLs don’t illuminate your taillights and will not provide adequate illumination in low-light conditions.

Select your low beam lamps when driving around town at night or when it’s raining for increased visibility or, if fitted select Auto Lamps and then your vehicle will automatically activate your head lamps when the ambient light drops below a certain level.

All Everest come equipped with AUTO lamps. For each ignition cycle, the headlamps will automatically return to AUTO by default. This means lamps are automatically activated during low light conditions and when the wipers are on.

If you’re driving in fog, then make sure you switch on Everest’s fog lamps (if equipped). These are aimed low to illuminate the area in front of your vehicle rather than projecting a beam down the road and lighting up the fog. Fog lamps are different to daytime running lights. High beam head lamps are useless in fog and will have the opposite effect, lighting up the fog and making it impossible to see down the road. If your vehicle is fitted with fog lamps then the switch to activate them will be on the lighting control panel. You should only activate the fog lamps at times of reduced visibility.

Only use high beam lamps when there are no other road users around you, to prevent dazzling them. If your Everest is equipped with Matrix LED with glare-free high beam, then you’ll need to switch on glare free functionality via the SYNC screen:

  • Press Settings on you Sync screen
  • Press Vehicle – select Glare Free Lighting

Once activated your Everest will recognise on coming vehicles and provide optimum illumination for the driver without dazzling the driver of the oncoming vehicle. Matrix LED technology blocks light from reaching other road users while keeping the area around them illuminated.

For Everest fitted with automatic high2 beam, then this will automatically switch high beam lighting off completely when head or tail lamps of other vehicles are detected. Automatic high beam function also turns the high beam lights back on when no other vehicle lights are detected. To turn the system off:

  • Access vehicle Settings on the SYNC screen
  • Press Lighting
  • Switch off automatic high beam

Don’t look at the light

When driving at night your eyes adjust to the dimly lit cabin and the dark road ahead. Sudden blasts of light, like the headlights of oncoming vehicles, can disrupt your night vision. To avoid being dazzled look slightly to the side to protect your night vision.

Keep an eye out for animals

A lot of animals are more active at night and for obvious reasons they’re harder to see too. But if you know what to look out for you stand a better chance of spotting an animal on or beside the road with enough time to slow down safely to avoid a collision. One tell-tale sign will be light reflected in their eyes which will appear as pinpoints of bright light. You’ll often see their eyes before you can see the whole animal.

What’s the range?

Everest's Matrix LED with glare-free high beam boast a clever high-beam boost function. When the conditions are right, the headlamp can project a beam, via a cluster of dormant LEDs helping to illuminate even more of the road. The high beam boost system will only work if:

  • your vehicle is travelling more than 40km/h
  • the system detects no other traffic (head lamps or tail lamps)
  • if the ambient light is low enough that you require high beams

These advanced headlights partner with the vehicle’s forward-facing camera, which can detect head or taillights up to 800 metres away , to monitor the road. When the system detects another vehicle it creates a light tunnel keeping the vehicle ‘in the dark’ and preventing Everest's high beam headlights from dazzling the driver of the other vehicle. This means that while light is blocked from reaching the other vehicle, the high beam lighting continues to provide maximum illumination of the road.

Via the Exterior Lighting Control panel your Everest offers the choice of: Lamps off; Parking lamps on; Autolamps on; and Headlamps on and Fog lamps on. These options are activated by turning a dial with a light illuminating to indicate the selected choice.

Not all roads are straight

This is why Everest Matrix LED headlights whilst in low beam offer dynamic bending functionality. This feature uses sensors to measure vehicle speed and steering angle to swivel the headlight up to 15 degrees. This “bends” the light beam providing increased visibility to illuminate the path through the corner including most hairpin bends.

In addition to dynamic bending lights, Everest also offers static cornering lights which activate when the vehicle is turning or stopped at an intersection. When this feature is activated in your vehicle, this automatically illuminates the side of the road to give you enhanced visibility through a turn.

Automatic High Beam Control

For Everest fitted with automatic high beam2 then this will automatically switch high beam lighting off completely when head or tail lamps of other vehicles are detected.

Using the forward facing cameras to detect head or taillights of other vehicles, Automatic high beam will switch off not to dazzle other drivers and turn back on when no vehicles are detected.

The system will only work if you’ve activated Autolamps your vehicle is travelling more than 40km/h, the system detects no head or taillights, and if the ambient light is low enough that you require high beams. You can access Automatic High Beam Control via the SYNC® 4A screen:

  1. Press Settings
  2. Press Vehicle
  3. Press Lighting 4. Press Auto Highbeam On or Of

1. Driver-assist features are supplemental and do not replace the driver’s attention, judgment and need to control the vehicle. May not operate at certain speeds, or in certain driving, road or weather conditions. See Owner’s Manual for more information.

2. Don’t drive distracted. Use voice operated systems where possible and don’t use handheld devices while driving. Some features may be locked out while the vehicle is in gear. Not all SYNC features are compatible with all phones. SYNC screen appearance and functionality may change over time due to software updates.
