  • The Ford Performance Club was announced by Edsel Ford II and Ford Performance’s global head of motorsport, Mark Rushbrook, who presented a welcome pack to the first member of the club, Ranger Raptor owner Ryan O’Neill
  • McLaughlin leads the Supercars drivers’ championship by 463 points, while Shell V-Power Racing leads the teams’ championship with Tickford Supercheap/The Bottle-O Racing in third and Tickford Monster Energy Racing fourth in the teams’ series

Gold Coast, 28 October, 2019 – Edsel Ford II joined Ford Performance’s Mark Rushbrook and Kay Hart, President and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand, at the Vodafone Gold Coast 600. Mr Ford, who was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2019, helped launch the Ford Performance Club as part of his first Supercars event, and was able to show his personal support for Shell V-Power Racing and Tickford Racing while welcoming Kelly Racing to the Ford family for 2020.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to be in Australia not only for the racing, but to meet some of our dealers. We had great discussions not only about Ford’s business here, but the greater industry as whole,” said Mr Ford.

“Supercars is such great racing – the drivers actually have to drive the car with serious skill, and it really is something special. The Gold Coast race was the perfect opportunity to announce the Ford Performance Club in Australia, while allowing me to see these cars first hand has only increased my admiration for the great partners we have in Shell V-Power Racing and Tickford Racing,” Ford added. “To be able to meet the teams and drivers personally was a real thrill for me, and it’s also great that Kelly Racing will have two Mustangs on the 2020 grid, bringing more Fords to the series.”

The 2019 Vodafone Gold Coast 600 saw the reigning champion and current series leader, Scott McLaughlin from Shell V-Power Racing, achieve his 16th Armor All Pole Position of the season for the Saturday’s Race 26, with a third-place finish earning McLaughlin and co-driver Alexandre Prémat a treasured Surfboard trophy.

“Having Edsel Ford with us on the Gold Coast showed that being part of the Ford family is truly global,” said Kay Hart. “To have Edsel witness the enthusiasm and effort that has been put into the Mustang Supercar by our partners was a rare opportunity Edsel truly enjoyed, and galvanised our support of the teams and the series.”

Sunday’s Race 27 saw only four Mustangs start the race, following an incident for Tickford Racing’s Chaz Mostert in the Supercheap Auto Mustang on Saturday, and McLaughlin crashing heavily in qualifying for Sunday’s race, ending his weekend. The race result saw Cameron Waters/Michael Caruso Monster Energy Tickford Mustang the highest-place Ford in fifth place, followed by Lee Holdsworth/Thomas Randle in sixth, and Will and Alex Davison in seventh. Shell V-Power Racing’s Fabian Coulthard and Tony D’Alberto fought gallantly from sixteenth on the grid to come home in eleventh place.

Scott McLaughlin leads the 2019 Drivers’ Championship in the #17 Mustang, with 3437 points, with Fabian Coulthard fourth in the overall standings (2557), Chaz Mostert sixth on 2447 points in the Supercheap Tickford Mustang, Cameron Waters seventh (2296), Will Davison ninth (2159) and Lee Holdsworth tenth (2076 points).

Shell V-Power Racing leads the Teams’ Championship on 5634 points, with The Bottle-O/Supercheap Auto Tickford Racing third (4473) and Monster Energy Racing fourth (4375).

Round 14 of the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship will take place between 8 –10 November with the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 at Sandown Raceway, Melbourne, Victoria. Tickets can be purchased via supercars.com.au
