ANCAP 5 Star Safety

Focus is big on safety. For your peace of mind, Focus has an ANCAP 5 star safety rating available on all models except Focus XR5 Turbo, and Focus CL is rated 5 stars when specified with an optional safety pack. So it’s good to know that all Focus models come with a mighty long list of safety features that look after both you and your passengers.

Intelligent Safety System

Here's how the Intelligent Safety System (ISS) operates in the event of an emergency. Crash severity sensors located around the vehicle tell the Advanced Restraints Module (ARM) which safety features to deploy, and when. Depending on the locality and severity of the accident, driver and front passenger airbags are activated and where required side airbags deploy from the front seats. The ARM will also determine if driver and front passenger pyrotechnic seatbelt buckle pretensioners are required to assist in pulling you snugly into position. The Intelligent Safety System incorporates:

• Driver and front passenger airbags
• Pyrotechnic seatbelt pre-tensioners (front only)
• Beltminder system
• Advanced Restraints Module (ARM)
• Crash severity sensors
• Side front airbags

Additionally, on all models except Focus CL^{^}, you get the added benefit of side curtain airbags and Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control and Emergency Brake Assist.

Airbag Protection

Focus airbags are designed to provide optimum protection over a range of impact conditions. Every Focus includes driver, front passenger and side front airbags as standard safety equipment. For greater protection, side curtain airbags also come standard on all models except Focus CL^*.

* Side curtain airbags are available as part of an optional safety pack on Focus CL.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

ABS incorporating Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) is a standard safety feature on every Focus. ABS helps prevent the brakes from locking under heavy braking pressure, thereby increasing the amount of steering control in an emergency braking situation. So you have greater peace of mind.

Additional Safety Features

The Focus also includes many additional safety features to help keep you secure in the event of an accident. Features include energy absorbing crumple zones to reduce the force of the impact, anti-intrusion clutch and brake pedals that collapse away from the driver's legs to reduce the chance of leg injuries, and a high-strength passenger cell providing additional protection to the occupants from the force of an accident.
