Ford EcoBoost Sales Double in First Quarter, Will be Part of Ford Kuga Campaign Targeting Young Families Who Prioritise Fuel Economy
Thu, Apr 28, 2016
- Ford is investing in Australia like no other automaker with $2 billion invested in R&D the past six years and even more to launch a record number of vehicles, including more fuel-efficient engine options leading to a doubling of EcoBoost sales through the first quarter compared to the same time last year.
- EcoBoost sales increase as Ford now offers the engine in the Mustang, Focus, Mondeo and Ford Kuga.
- Sales of new Ford Kuga with an upgraded EcoBoost lineup, including the addition of a new 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine, increased almost 40 percent in the first quarter as the company launches a new campaign targeted to more efficiency-conscious young families.
- Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine was named International Engine of the Year ‘Best Engine Under 1.0-litre’ for the fourth consecutive year in 2015. In 2014 the 1.0-litre EcoBoost was the first engine to be named overall International Engine if the Year three times in a row.
MELBOURNE– Australian drivers are embracing Ford’s efficient and powerful EcoBoost technology as sales of the engine across the lineup more than double in the first quarter compared to this time last year.
EcoBoost technology – which when compared to larger displacement engines provides the capability for improved efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions without sacrificing performance – was first introduced to Australian customers on the Mondeo. This was followed by local development of the technology for the 2012 Ford Falcon as part of Ford’s ongoing leading local investment of nearly $2 billion since 2009.
“Ford Kuga is a big reason for our EcoBoost momentum, which we plan to build on with our new campaign to appeal to young families looking for better fuel economy and other innovations such as SYNC2 to make their trips more enjoyable with features such as WiFi for their kids,” said Graeme Whickman, President and CEO, Ford of Australia. “The new Mustang also has created a halo for our brand, including drawing attention to our EcoBoost technology.”
Ford Kuga and EcoBoost – a perfect partnership
Ford Kuga’s new advertising campaign is drawing in more young families by highlighting innovations such SYNC2, giving dealers the opportunity to feature EcoBoost during test drives.
Sales of Ford Kuga, fitted with either a 1.5-litre (Ambiente) or 2.0-litre (Trend/Titanium) EcoBoost engine, are up nearly 40 percent year-on-year. Ford’s internal research suggests young families prioritise fuel economy more than any other product attribute and the company believes the EcoBoost products help them.
The new Mustang already enjoys the highest favorable opinion of all Ford vehicles in Australia, helping raise the overall profile of the brand. While V8 models define Mustang’s image, 49% of all Mustang Convertibles sold in the first quarter of 2016 came with an EcoBoost under the hood.
Sales up with better efficiency
In total 3044 Ford vehicles fitted with an EcoBoost engine were sold in the first three months of 2016, compared with 1297 during the same period last year. Sales of the EcoBoost powered Ford Focus, which is now driven exclusively by the technology, are up 768.6%, while sales of Mondeo with EcoBoost are up 288.4% when compared to this time last year.
‘‘We expect EcoBoost sales to continue their upward trend, as Australian drivers and young families prioritise fuel efficiency, even in a climate of relatively low fuel prices, and Ford Australia shifts even more focus to the technology across our range,’ added Whickman.
EcoBoost sales are also on the rise elsewhere around the globe, with figures from the United States revealing sales of EcoBoost powered Ford vehicles were up 45 percent in 2015.
The Ford Kuga’s 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine partnered with Auto Stop-Start technology produces 110kW* (6.3L/100km** - manual) and 134kW* (7.2L/100km** FWD & 7.4L/100km AWD** - automatic) of power with both generating 240Nm* of torque. The 2.0-litre Ford Kuga produces an impressive 178kW/345Nm^ with a fuel economy of 8.8L/100km.**
The popular engine is also being embraced by performance car buyers, with the 2.3-litre 4 cylinder EcoBoost Mustang producing 233kW and 432 Nm^^ – more powerful than the original V8-powered Mustang in 1964.
More efficient with power when needed
In all EcoBoost engines, Ford’s engineers combine direct fuel injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging to offer the efficiency of a smaller engine with the power of a larger engine. In fact, the 3 cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine produces the same power as a 2.0-litre engine did 15 years ago, while using less fuel.
Direct injection ensures every drop of fuel is burnt by injecting a highly pressurised, precise amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder in the engine. Ford’s Twin-independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) electronic control system individually varies the timing of the intake and exhaust valves to match the engine’s operating conditions. This improves fuel efficiency and delivers smoother performance.
Turbocharging uses the engine’s exhaust gases, which would otherwise be wasted, to push more air into the engine. The more air in the combustion chamber, the more power comes out.
2015 marked the fourth consecutive year, the Ford 1.0-litre EcoBoost was named International Engine of the Year “Best Engine Under 1.0-litre.” In 2014, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost became the first engine to be named overall International Engine of the Year three times in a row.
