Mustang Mania Punctuates Ford’s Local Investment with Surprising 6,000 Orders, Plus Craze for Customized Plates, ‘Selfie’ Paparazzi and Viral Great Ocean Road Video

- Ford is investing in Australia like no other automaker with $2 billion in R&D the past six years, and devoting even more to launch a record number of products, including five performance vehicles highlighted by the globally iconic Mustang becoming an instant hit
- Ford has now surpassed its original 2016 sales projections by a third with 6,000 orders as new Mustang owners report their new cars have become backdrops for numerous selfies and that they are “getting used” to all of the unexpected attention
- This work builds on Ford’s Australian R&D investment of almost $2 billion R&D in the past six years, including $300 million invested in 2015 alone
- Race red continues to be Australia’s most popular colour, and V8 coupes the most popular model variant as Australians access direct-from-factory versions of the iconic pony car for the first time
- The Mustangs local introduction also is gaining buzz around the world with Ford’s first video of the car traveling the Great Ocean Road and Sea Cliff Bridge reaching almost 250,000 fans globally and growing.
MELBOURNE –Mustang customers may understand a bit more what celebrities felt like this week walking down the red carpet as their first drives on Aussie roads have stirred an unexpected feeding frenzy.
In fact, Australia’s love affair with Mustang is strengthening with reports of couples purchasing ‘his and her’ Mustangs to a staggering increase in government-sold customized license plates. In Victoria alone, 344+ sets of Mustang number plates have been sold – more custom plates than have been sold for any other Ford nameplate.
Ford is facing similar responses after receiving a higher-than-expected 6,000 orders after initially planning to sell about 4,500 cars in 2016 with limited history as this is the first direct-from-factory, right-hand-drive version of the iconic pony car available in Australia. This interest is underpinning Ford’s investment to bolster its performance vehicle lineup in Australia to five models this year.
“Our Australian R&D and product investments are paying off as we transform Ford in Australia and customers respond to our new vehicles,” says Graeme Whickman, President and CEO, Ford of Australia. “The Mustang typifies this excitement as we expand our performance vehicle line-up as part of plans to launch 20 new vehicles by 2020.”
Mustang owners and enthusiasts Jenny Richardson and husband Scott recently received delivery of their ‘race red’ Mustang convertible with EcoBoost – appropriately named Sally – and have noticed a strong reaction in their local town in the Blue Mountains, NSW.
“I don’t think there’s been one time I’ve gone out and not had someone stop me to chat about the Mustang,” said Jenny. “Often times when I walk up to the Mustang in a car park I find strangers standing next to it snapping selfies – it’s really quite remarkable.”
Derek Poulton of Melbourne says he has been amazed by the attention he’s received because of his convertible Mustang. “It seems that everyone – young and old – is in love with the Mustang,” says Derek. “I’ve had old men approach me to chat about it and I’ve had little kids give me a thumbs-up as I drive past. All the attention takes a bit of getting used to!”
When it comes to power and style, Australians prefer the V8 coupe model and the ‘race red’ colour. Other preferred colours are ‘magnetic’ and ‘ruby red’.
February saw convertible sales with a staggering 40 per cent being sold with an EcoBoost engine – Ford’s advanced four-cylinder engine technology designed to increase economy and reduce CO2 emissions by about 20 percent, all while offering more power than the original V8-powered 1964 Mustang.
“Our Mustang has EcoBoost and offers the perfect mix of functionality and power,” said Jenny. “I drive the Mustang every day, so fuel efficiency was important, but the ‘get-up-and-go’ is what gets my heart pounding and was the main reason I bought a Mustang.”
Ford’s Facebook page also was over-run by fans locally and around the world in early March when the company released its first video of Mustang traversing iconic Australian locations. The scenic footage of the Mustangs cruising down the Great Ocean Road and Sea Cliff Bridge already has reached 250,000 fans globally and growing.(Video link can be found here)
The new intake system meets Ford’s exacting Global standards and is a proof point of the high standard of Australian automotive innovation.
Mustang – No. 1 sports car
Based on January and February sales, Mustang was the No. 1-selling sports car in the country, with nearly twice as many (389) sold than the next best in the segment (215) in January.

The launch of Mustang in December 2015 capped a landmark year for Ford in Australia, having launched a huge number of new vehicles including the Everest SUV and Ranger all while investing more than $300 million in R&D alone.
Ford is investing more in Australia than any other automaker, including more than $300 million in local R&D in 2015 alone. Ford also is investing heavily to expand its Australian line-up with Mustang capping a record year of launches in 2015, which also included introductions of the locally developed Everest SUV and Ranger.
Ford’s product onslaught also has strengthened its performance line-up, which now includes five world-class vehicles that are winning praise. They are: the Falcon Sprint, Fiesta ST, Focus ST, soon-to-be-released Focus RS and Mustang.
